Summary

Two deposits of Roman silver coins found in Edlington Wood next to each other: a) Edlington Wood I: 80 denarii and 1 antoninianus, ranging from Antoninus Pius to Philip II found in a small beaker of Castor ware; b) Edlington Wood II: 356 denarii and 172 antoniniani, ranging from Septimius Severus to Salonina, found in a native pot. These two groups of coins were almost certainly parts of a single hoard which overflowed from the small "Castor ware" beaker into the larger pot. The content of both deposits together comprised a total of 609 coins, consisting in 436 denarii and 172 antoniniani (Antoninus Pius to Valerian and Gallienus).

Site comment

The finds were made in an oval enclosure defended by a massive dry stone wall of orthostatic construction and in the south-west corner of it, close to the inner face of the rampart on the site of what must have been a habitation. This enclosure is one of several within the wood in which have been found Roman fibulae and other objects, with quantities of Roman sherds, mostly of the third century.
