Summary

A hoard of 204 denarii ranging from the Republic to Caligula was found in a wheel-made grey jar. This had been buried in the upper filling of an Iron Age ditch. Metal detector users found and plotted seventeen coins within a six metre square area of a ploughed field near Sutton Hall, Suffolk. Working with the Suffolk County Archaeological Unit, the ploughsoil was taken down in the original finds area. This revealed the main group of 135 coins in an area twelve centimetres square at the base of the ploughsoil and in the top of one of two small ditches or gullies cut into the sand subsoil. Beneath the coins were found the sherds of part of one pot which had been a container for the hoard and another which may also be associated. The small ditch was not excavated below the level of the coin hoard. Following the discovery further surface metal detecting produced more coins within an area nine metres by six metres around the hoard find-spot and another group of four denarii about 100 metres away. This latter group included the coin of Claudius. While we have chosen to regard this coin as probably belonging to the hoard, the possibility has to be borne in mind that it was simply a stray find since there are a large number of other finds of Iron Age and Roman date from the same field. If this is the case then the hoard would end with the denarius of Gaius minted in AD 37. The hoard consisted of the following: Republic - Claudius I.

Ceramic vessel

The fabric is hard, the colour ranges from a mid grey core through lighter grey to reddish brown margins, with plentiful sand (quartzite?) inclusions. The vessel is wheel-thrown, the base turned to give a slight foot-ring and the exterior surface is smoothed. At the very top of the surviving profile it is markedly carinated. Both the fabric and the form are characteristic of the mid-first century, usually dated to the post-Conquest and pre-Flavian period.
