Summary
A hoard of 3rd century antoniniani was found in a paddock at Frognall, Deeping St. James. The hoard, consisting of 2-3,000 coins, was found at a depth of 25-30 cm and was contained in two small pots. The two pots had lain in a shallow depression cut into a layer of stiff clay on and in which were a number of other small and abraded Roman sherds. The pots had tipped on their sides, and the coins had been scattered for approximately 1 m in a southerly direction, perhaps as a result of medieval ploughing.
Aerial photographs indicate substantial settlements in the vicinity.
2080 coin: 11 denarii, 2043 regular antoniniani (radiates), 30 antoniniani (radiates) in Pot 1; 776 regular antoniniani (radiates) and 9 irregular antoniniani (radiates) in Pot 2.
